To the Selection Committee,

Throughout my academic career, I have had the opportunity to work with students and researchers of extraordinary intellectual ability. Very rarely, however, have I encountered someone whose greatest strength is not the speed with which he learns, but the depth with which he thinks. It is with this conviction that I write to recommend Mr. Thiago.

We live in an era in which technical competence has become relatively abundant. Professionals capable of developing software, building distributed systems, or mastering contemporary technologies are increasingly common. What remains exceptional is finding individuals capable of questioning the assumptions underlying these systems and proposing conceptual models that are more elegant, general, and enduring.

The candidate belongs to this second category.

His way of reasoning is closer to the tradition of classical computer scientists than to the predominant profile of the contemporary technology industry. While many focus their efforts on specific frameworks, programming languages, or platforms, he demonstrates a genuine interest in the fundamental principles of computing: abstraction, semantics, protocols, knowledge representation, distributed architectures, and the organization of complex systems.

In our discussions, it became evident that his concern is never merely to build a functional product. His objective is to understand which structures remain valid regardless of the technologies involved. This search for conceptual invariants reveals an uncommon degree of scientific maturity and a mode of thinking guided by first principles.

His ability to connect distinct fields deserves particular emphasis. He does not treat software engineering, systems architecture, information theory, philosophy of technology, and organizational modeling as isolated disciplines. Rather, he integrates these domains coherently, producing a systemic perspective that is rare even among experienced researchers.

Another aspect that I consider particularly valuable is his intellectual independence.

The candidate shows little interest in following trends or reproducing established consensus. Instead, his approach is to study different schools of thought deeply, confront competing arguments, and develop his own conclusions. Such intellectual autonomy requires courage, discipline, and a continual willingness to revise one's own hypotheses in light of new evidence; qualities that are indispensable for anyone seeking to conduct original research.

His remarkable combination of abstraction and pragmatism is equally noteworthy.

It is relatively common to encounter researchers who excel at theoretical formulation but are unable to translate their ideas into practice. Likewise, there are highly productive professionals whose conceptual scope is limited. The candidate moves naturally between these two extremes. He is able to discuss abstract models of knowledge organization while simultaneously translating them into technically consistent, scalable, and implementable architectures.

His intellectual work demonstrates a preference for fundamental problems over incremental solutions. Rather than asking, "How can a particular system be built?", he tends to ask, "How should this class of system be conceived?" This difference in perspective is precisely what distinguishes researchers capable of producing lasting contributions from those who merely follow technological developments.

Equally relevant is his attitude toward knowledge.

I have never observed in him an interest in superficial prestige or immediate recognition. His commitment is directed toward understanding difficult problems, developing elegant solutions, and building technologies that expand intellectual autonomy and access to knowledge. This intrinsic motivation is often one of the strongest indicators of a researcher's long-term potential.

Naturally, as with any genuinely creative researcher, his ideas frequently challenge established conventions. I regard this as a strength, not a limitation. Institutions committed to academic excellence thrive precisely because they welcome individuals capable of formulating questions for which no consensus answers yet exist.

In my assessment, the candidate possesses the intellectual qualities necessary to thrive in highly demanding academic environments: insatiable curiosity, analytical rigor, independent thinking, interdisciplinary synthesis, and perseverance in the face of complex problems.

These qualities, far more than proficiency in any particular technology, are what characterize researchers capable of making meaningful contributions to science.

I recommend his application with full confidence and without reservation. I am convinced that any institution committed to research excellence will find in him not merely a competent student or collaborator, but a thinker capable of enriching the academic environment through the originality of his ideas, the depth of his analysis, and his unwavering commitment to the pursuit of knowledge.
