## Replace faulty brick

### Choosing between `replace-brick` and `reset-brick`

Use `replace-brick` when the source brick is being replaced by a genuinely new
brick. The command updates the volume configuration and starts the healing
needed to synchronize the new brick. It is supported for pure replicate and
distributed-replicate volumes; for a distribute-only volume, use
`add-brick` followed by `remove-brick` instead.

Use `reset-brick` when the brick is being relocated while retaining its brick
identity, such as moving the brick to another path or host. The `start` form
stops a specific source brick safely:

# gluster volume reset-brick <VOLNAME> <SOURCE-BRICK> start

The replacement form is:

# gluster volume reset-brick <VOLNAME> <SOURCE-BRICK> <NEW-BRICK> commit

Do not use `reset-brick` to replace a source brick with a genuinely new brick.
GlusterFS rejects that case and directs the operator to use `replace-brick`.

**Replacing a brick in a _pure_ distribute volume**

To replace a brick on a distribute only volume, add the new brick and then remove the brick you want to replace. This will trigger a rebalance operation which will move data from the removed brick.

> NOTE: Replacing a brick using the 'replace-brick' command in gluster is supported only for _pure_ replicate or distributed-replicate volumes.
