Summary

  • add prerequisites for project-local and user-scoped Aider setup
  • explicitly document that Aider has no native MCP support instead of presenting unavailable Rafter tools
  • add common troubleshooting steps and a safe uninstall procedure
  • preserve the current RAFTER.md and read: integration model

Test plan

  • checked all six requested recipe sections are present
  • checked the recipe does not present the obsolete mcp-server-command key as current configuration
  • git diff --check

Spec update

Not applicable; this is documentation-only and does not change CLI behavior.

Part of #33 (Aider recipe slice only).

Thanks — this is well scoped and accurate. I checked each claim against the tree: the --with-aider flag, the legacy mcp-server-command strip, the read-list preservation on re-init, and rafter brief commands all match current behavior, and documenting that Aider has no native MCP support (rather than listing tools that won't work there) is exactly the gap the issue was about.

Appreciate you scoping it to the Aider slice rather than claiming all of #33 — cursor and windsurf are still open there.

One optional nit, not a blocker: "Aider itself is optional during setup" reads a little oddly at the top of an Aider recipe. Something like "Aider need not be installed to run rafter agent init --with-aider; install it before your first Aider session" is clearer. Happy to merge as-is and tidy that separately.

Merging — thanks for the contribution.

Thanks for verifying the Aider slice against the current tree. I have marked the PR ready for review so it is no longer blocked by draft state.
