Verifying Tyrian 2000 (1999) (Eclipse Software)

Checklist

Have adequate installation instructions been provided to match any config files in the DOSZ?

Not applicable. The freeware package is already in runnable form. On a clean standalone launch, the DOSZ opens SETUP.EXE; the DOSC supplies the configured TYRIAN.CFG used by the default launch.

Have any official patches been applied, if necessary?

No patch was applied. The included release notes identify this as Tyrian 2000 v1.0 from October 1999.

Have digital versions (Steam, GOG) been checked for matching?

Tyrian 2000 is currently free on GOG, so I added its store link. I did not compare the current GOG payload byte-for-byte; this entry was built from the linked freeware/TDC source set.

Can the game benefit from using embedded data or embedded patches in the datfile?

No.

Can DoDAT build the game from the install media?

Yes. DoDAT built the promoted 92-file DOSZ from the source files and then passed full SHA-1 verification for all 92 ROM entries. Before excluding redundant Windows metadata, it also verified all 97 original entries.

If the game requires a yml in the DOSZ, has it been added to the yml folder in the repo?

Not applicable. The required DOS.YML launch configuration is supplied by the DOSC.

Are there .PIF or .ICO or Win32 .EXE files that could be excluded?

Yes. I excluded ShipEdit.pif and the four Windows icon files Tyricn2.ico, Tyricn3.ico, Tyricn4.ico, and Tyricon.ico. No Win32 executable was identified among the retained EXE files.

Do the file timestamps match the installation media?

Yes. The rebuilt DOSZ passes DoDAT's full verification, including the DAT metadata.

Does the DOSZ run standalone?

Yes. Without the DOSC it opens Setup; sound effects initially default to "No effects". Selecting Sound Blaster with DMA 1 enables SFX and the game runs correctly.

For CD games, can the game be set up to run without a CD mounted?

Not applicable. This package contains no CD image and runs without one.

Can the game benefit from using CHDtoOGG?

Not applicable.

Is the game creating a swap file in the .pure.zip that could be avoided by increasing memory size? Or is it creating other bloated files that could be prevented by adding them in the DOSZ?

No. After the test, the persistent Pure overlay contained only the 2-byte AUTOBOOT.DBP file.

Does the DOSC contain problematic data (i.e. copyright issue)?

No. It contains DOS.YML launch configuration and Tyrian configuration data.

Does the DOSC have copy protection removed, if possible?

Not applicable. This is the freeware release and no copy-protection prompt was encountered.

Is the game running at the correct speed? Is CPU year specified?

Yes. cpu_max_year: 1995 is specified, and gameplay appeared to run at the correct speed. Tyrian 2000 did not show the original Tyrian menu-speed issue.

Is the DOSC auto-running and skipping past any obstructions? Does it use WAITMODECHANGE if possible?

Yes. The default configuration auto-runs C:\TYRIAN2K.EXE and uses run_input: (WAITMODECHANGE).

Does the game have MT-32 support? If so, is it correctly using MT-32 (old) or CM-32L (new), going by the Vogons Wiki?

No specific MT-32 option is exposed by the supplied setup or DOSC.

Does the game have General MIDI support?

Yes. The DOSC includes a General MIDI launch option using the Roland SC-55 soundfont. The configured Sound Blaster/FM default was hand-tested; this alternate definition was inspected in the DOSC.

Is the game set up to run with the best quality graphics options by default?

Not applicable. The game uses its native graphics mode and displayed correctly during testing.

For certain old games only - are the graphics/audio improved by specifying video_card: pcjr, tandy, or generic_cga?

Not applicable.

Does the game have a mouse cursor that benefits from enabling input_directmouse?

No benefit was identified, so the existing DOSC leaves input_directmouse unset.

Does a game with separate episodes/executables have the options named and ordered properly in the DOSZ? Do they use the run_utility feature?

Yes. The DOSC exposes General MIDI Music, Setup Program, and Ship Editor in that order. Setup and Ship Editor both use run_utility: true.

Does the game share saves with a sequel, expansion, etc? If so, is it updated to use the .savename feature?

Not applicable.

Is the game data in the root of the ZIP (unless game does not work that way)?

Yes. All 92 retained files are at the ZIP root.

Is the entry in the right variant file (i.e. Freeware)?

Yes. Tyrian 2000 was released as freeware and is promoted to PureDOSDAT_Freeware.xml.

For games which include CD images, is there a smaller installation variant that offers the same features but needs less files?

Not applicable.

Comment

Built with DoDAT and hand-tested in DOSBox Pure. With the matching DOSC present, the default launch auto-starts correctly with music and Sound Blaster sound effects. The standalone DOSZ also runs after configuring Sound Blaster in Setup.

Summary of changes:

  • Move the Tyrian 2000 entry from the unverified DAT to the verified freeware DAT
  • Move its DOSC from unverified/dosc to dosc without changing its contents
  • Exclude one PIF and four ICO files that are not needed for the DOS package
  • Add the current free GOG store link
