Using VSCode + PuTTY to access FNAL.GOV:

Once you have already set up PuTTY, you should consider using VSCode as a handy IDE when doing work. You should already have installed the remote-SSH extension and successfully logged onto gvmp0X before proceeding with this step. If you have, refer to the following github comment for using Kerberos authentication through PuTTY.

For the record, the plink.exe method worked for me today with vscode 1.59.0. (Some have reported it was broken).

1. Install Remote SSH extension

I've got this working on a few clients. However, we've noticed that in it only works if /.vscode-server/ has already been installed for the user's account. If this is our first time trying to login to the server using VSCode, and the client is trying to use Putty on Windows, VSCode tries to install using scp. The configuration described here only seems to remap ssh, not scp.

Any suggestions on work arounds? For now, we're finding other ways to get the .vscode-server files onto the user's account. Once we do that, everything works great.

Hi! I'm also at the lab and just did this workaround yesterday for a summer student. I'm admittedly unfamiliar with DUNE computing specifics, but it seems to only try and use scp if it can't download the VSCode Server on the remote host directly. If the server you're trying to access has general internet, you could try specifying the "Local Server Download" setting (search @ext:ms-vscode-remote.remote-ssh,ms-vscode-remote.remote-ssh-edit,ms-vscode.remote-explorer scp in settings) to "Off", which should force it to only try and download the files directly over the internet vs downloading them locally and scp-ing them:

If whitelisting is possible, MS does mention specifically what endpoints are used to setup/support VSCode here. If you can't access the internet, you can manually download it and transfer it over, but it sounds like you've already got that working at the moment.
